BARI IN ONE DAY: 8 THINGS TO DO AND SEE

27 Nov BARI IN ONE DAY: 8 THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Bari is the capital of beautiful Puglia region in southern Italy, famous worldwide for the beauty of its beaches, its pristine nature, history, good food and great people.

Not only, Bari is the gateway to Puglia, being well connected with a train station, and an international port and airport.

When visiting Puglia for the first time I strongly advice to stop in Bari: the city is lively and pleasant, and you could decide to spend a few days exploring it before proceeding, although just one day could be enough.

Here’s what you can’t miss:

NAZARIO SAURO SEAFRONT WALK

BARI WHAT TO SEE TO DO-55

Bari is the city with the second longest seafront walk in Italy. In fact, the city with the longest one is my hometown, Trieste :)

The seafront walk in Bari is very pretty, decorated with cute street lamps, and surrounded by liberty and lictorian style buildings. Here and there you could encounter some local fishermen, with which you can chat and steal some pictures.

BARI OLD TOWN

Bari is quite big, although the attractions lay pretty much all in the picturesque old town.

You can reach the old town from the seafront walk, or if coming from the train station take via Sparano da Bari, a very elegant street where you can enjoy some gracious liberty-style buildings, the small park of Piazza Umberto I, and many shops.

The old town seems like a village detached from the city and away from the modern routine. Getting lost in the small alleys that smells of coffee and laundry is a priceless experience!

GET ON A VELOSERVICE RICKSHAW

You can easily wander the whole old town by feet, or get on a Veloservice rickshaw! Discovering the city with Veloservice is fun, comfortable and eco-friendly! You could also choose both options: to get lost by yourself in the city merging with the locals’ rhythms, and then take the Veloservice to get advantage of the guides’ local knowledge, which will guide you directly to the points of interest, sharing Bari’s every little secret!

WANDERING TASTING

Panzerotti, popizze, sgagliozze, orecchiette …
Southern Italy is famous not only for the beauty of its beaches but also for the great food!
Instead of stopping for dinner, try a wandering tasting, stopping here and there to taste the local delicacies, that believe me, are many ..
Here some local places where you can stop and grab a typical and delicious bite underway:

Antica Salumeria del Gusto – Piazza Balenzano 12/A

Panificio Fiore – Strada Palazzo di Città 38

Cibò (panzerotti di tutte le forme, dimensioni e gusti) – Piazza Mercantile 29

Street food is also a big scene in Bari, and locals often set up proper kitchens on the streets, so don’t hesitate to stop underway and taste what they have to offer to you, you won’t regret it!

ARCO BASSO AND THE GRANNIES

BARI WHAT TO SEE TO DO-29

Bari might be the only city in the world that can boast among its attractions its grannies!

A bit everywhere in the old town, but especially in the characteristic “Arco Basso” street, grannies like to mingle in the streets with each other and the tourists, but above all to make the orecchiette, the typical pasta. Visit them, they will be happy to chat with you, to share anecdotes about their city, and of course to sell you some of the delicious pasta they’ve been making all day! The perfect souvenir to take home with you or to give to your beloved ones!

SAN NICOLA CATHEDRAL

BARI WHAT TO SEE TO DO-12

The major attraction of Bari might be the San Nicola cathedral. This beautiful church is not only important on a architectonic, historic and religious point of view, but it’s very special to Bari’s people as inside lays their Saint Protector, San Nicola.

It’s on this Saint that the figure of Santa Claus is based, so let me say that in this church rests nonetheless than Santa! :)

SVEVO CASTLE

BARI WHAT TO SEE TO DO-23

Bari shares many features with the cities of Southern Italy, as Palermo for example. Both have a history of arabian, greek, spanish and norman dominations. The heritage of these dominations is visible everywhere in these cities and the Svevo Castle is one of them. Built by king Ruggero II, is decorated with arabic figures, and has been a residence of Isabella D’Aragona.

The ticket costs only 3,00 EUR!

SAN SABINO CATHEDRAL

BARI WHAT TO SEE TO DO-33

This cathedral has a very pretty facade although is a bit spare inside. If you don’t have time, enjoy it just from the street!

The whole tour, who brought me to Bari, Ostuni, Alberobello and Matera, has been completely organized by Italica Incoming.

I can’t wait to bring you to these beautiful places as well, as Bari is just the beginning of this trip to amazing Puglia! :)

Have you ever been to Bari?

What else would you suggest to do and see?

Hi Pam! No, I’ve never been to Bari but your intoxicating post has definitely made it a city I would like to visit! The seafront sounds awesome because I enjoy people watching and I would absolutely take a ride on a rickshaw! Plus, who doesn’t like grannies and Santa Claus! It’s a win-win destination. Fantastic post as always my friend! :)
